01 · AVAILABILITYPopular gearing options, regularly in stock

We aim to keep a broad selection of Rotor chainrings and matching cover versions available. Select your options to see the actual availability of your combination.

02 · GEARING & WEIGHTFrom 50/34 to 54/39, without unnecessary weight

Choose 50/34, 52/36, 53/39 or 54/39. CNC-machined cut-outs reduce the weight of the chainrings while maintaining excellent stiffness.

03 · TRUSTED ROTOR QUALITYA proven name in performance components

Precision-machined 7075 aluminium, made in Spain, with carefully shaped teeth for reliable front shifting and proven build quality.

Which chainring combination should you choose?

Shimano 105 and Ultegra 12s cranksets are generally supplied with compact or semi-compact gearing. Rotor opens up two particularly desirable options for racers and powerful riders: 53/39 and 54/39.

53/39The all-round racing choice

The classic 53-tooth outer ring paired with a 39-tooth inner ring. A natural upgrade from 52/36 for fast group rides, road racing and riders who prefer traditional race gearing.

54/39Extra gearing for fast roads

The 54-tooth outer ring gives you a slightly bigger top gear, while retaining the same versatile 39-tooth inner ring as 53/39. Ideal for strong riders who spend plenty of time at high speed.

52/36Sporty and versatile

Well suited to fast road riding and sportives, with an easier climbing gear than 53/39 when using the same cassette.

50/34Climbing and endurance

For longer climbs, rolling terrain and endurance rides where a lower gear is valuable.

Why we recommend 53/39 or 54/39 to powerful riders: moving from a 52T to a 53T or 54T outer ring gives you a slightly higher gear at the same cadence, without changing the entire drivetrain. A 39T inner ring combined with an 11–34 cassette can still provide a useful climbing gear, depending on your fitness and terrain.

Moving from 52/36 to 53/39 typically adds very little weight: approximately 15–20 g, depending on the chainrings. Bigger gears do not necessarily mean a heavy crankset.

With the same cassette, 53/39 and 54/39 have exactly the same easiest gear. The 54T outer ring simply offers approximately 1.9% more gear development than the 53T outer ring.

Compatibility and what is included

The kit includes one Rotor NOQ round outer chainring, one Rotor NOQ round inner chainring, four matching crank arm covers and their bolts. The covers follow the shape of the Shimano crank arms for a neat factory-style finish. Crank arms are not included.

The product range also lists compatibility with Shimano factory power-meter cranksets, including FC-R8100-P and FC-R9200-P. If your crankset has an integrated power meter, please confirm the exact model with us before ordering so that the component clearances can be checked. For Shimano 11s cranksets, consider the Rotor round chainring kit with conventional bolts.

Shape and material

Round NOQ chainrings, CNC-machined 7075 aluminium with weight-saving cut-outs and high stiffness.

Manufacture and dispatch

Chainrings manufactured in Spain. Stock held and dispatched from France, subject to the selected combination being available.

Bolt interface

Shimano road asymmetric 4-arm, 110 mm BCD, for the compatible crankset models listed above.

Installation

Follow Rotor's instructions. Check front derailleur adjustment and chain length if you significantly increase the outer chainring size.

For the correct cover positions and bolt installation, refer to the Rotor R8100 / R9200 installation guide (PDF). Rotor specifies 7–8 Nm tightening torque for the cover fasteners.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit 53/39 or 54/39 chainrings to my Shimano 105 R7100 crankset?

Yes. Choose your preferred chainring combination and select the "Ultegra R8100 / 105 R7100" cover option. You can keep your original Shimano crank arms.

Why choose Rotor chainrings rather than replace the complete crankset?

You retain your Shimano crank arms and bottom bracket while gaining access to 53/39 and 54/39 gearing, lightweight CNC-machined chainrings and matching crank arm covers.

Do I need to replace the front derailleur or chain?

Replacing the front derailleur is not automatically necessary. However, check its height and alignment, fine-tune shifting and verify the chain length when moving to a significantly larger outer chainring.

Are Rotor NOQ chainrings oval?

No. NOQ is Rotor's round chainring range. For oval chainrings, see our Rotor Q-Rings kit with Shimano covers.

Easy installation: how to fit your Rotor chainrings

Keep your Shimano crankset. Replace the original two chainrings with Rotor NOQ rings, then install the four covers that match your crank arms. No frame modifications or bottom bracket replacement are required.

Tools: a 5 mm Allen key, a torque wrench for the cover fasteners and the normal tools needed to remove the original Shimano chainrings. This is a manageable job for a rider familiar with basic bicycle maintenance. If in doubt, ask a qualified bicycle mechanic.
  1. Remove the original Shimano chainrings

Remove the outer and inner chainrings, then clean the crank arm mounting surfaces before installing the replacement rings.

  2. Fit the Rotor chainrings

Position the inner and outer rings correctly, following the manufacturer's orientation marks and assembly instructions.

  3. Position the four covers

The Rotor covers are position-specific. Match each one to positions 1 to 4 in the official diagram below and check that you have selected the correct cover version for your crankset.

  4. Tighten the bolts from the rear

Fit the fasteners as shown, then tighten them progressively with a 5 mm Allen fitting. Rotor specifies 7–8 Nm for the cover fasteners. Use a torque wrench; do not overtighten.

  5. Check shifting before your first ride

Test front shifts and adjust front derailleur height and alignment where needed. If you are upgrading to a 53T or 54T outer ring, also check that the chain is long enough.

Follow Rotor's original assembly diagram: it shows where the four R8100 / R9200 covers belong and how the bolts are fitted. Keep it open while working on the crankset.
