Why upgrade from a Shimano PressFit bottom bracket to CyclingCeramic?

Model Weight Material Serviceability Sealing Smoothness Bearing balls Grease
Shimano PressFit approx. 70 g Plastic / composite ★☆☆☆☆ ★★★☆☆ ★★☆☆☆ Steel Thicker protective grease, designed primarily for short-term protection rather than minimum drag.

★★★★★ ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Grade 3 ceramic Low-friction grease developed for ceramic bearings, balancing efficiency, protection and durability.
Lower friction CyclingCeramic is designed for very low bearing drag. Velo-Perso.com uses an indicative figure of 1 to 3 W at 90 rpm compared with a more conventional steel-bearing setup.
Longer service life when maintained The bearings can be cleaned and re-greased. Depending on riding conditions and servicing, service life can reach 2 to 5 times that of standard steel bearings.
Stiffer support and better protection Machined aluminium cups hold the bearings precisely, while the internal sleeve protects the centre of the bottom bracket from dirt and internal frame cables.

Velo-Perso.com's opinion
“If your frame is BB86 and you are keeping a Shimano 24 mm crankset, this is one of the simplest upgrades for improving smoothness and long-term durability. We especially like the free-running bearings, aluminium cups, sealing and the fact that the bottom bracket can be serviced instead of simply discarded once contamination appears. On a high-end bike equipped with 105, Ultegra or Dura-Ace, it is a coherent upgrade without changing the entire drivetrain.”

BB86 + 24 mm spindle: check these two dimensions before ordering

A road BB86 frame is approximately 86.5 mm wide at the bottom bracket shell with a 41 mm internal bore. The cups are pressed directly into the frame.

All road Shimano Hollowtech II 105, Ultegra and Dura-Ace cranksets in 10, 11 and 12-speed use a 24 mm spindle. Rotor Aldhu and Vegast cranksets are available with different spindle diameters, so make sure yours is the 24 mm version.

This bottom bracket directly replaces Shimano SM-BB92-41B and SM-BB72-41B when your frame is BB86 and your crankset uses a 24 mm spindle.

Compatibility by frame brand

BB86 is commonly found on bikes from Canyon, Scott, Giant, Lapierre, Bianchi, Cube, Ridley, BMC, Merida, Look, Wilier, Origine and many other brands. Standards may change between models and model years, so always verify your exact bike.

Not using a 24 mm spindle? Go straight to the correct BB86 version

Maintain the bearings to keep them running freely

The bottom bracket is supplied with CyclingCeramic grease. To preserve low friction and protect the races, inspect the bearings during major drivetrain services and re-grease them once the existing grease becomes contaminated.

Optimising a Shimano 12-speed drivetrain? Reduce friction elsewhere too

Once the bottom bracket is upgraded, the next logical areas are the rear derailleur pulleys. Ceramic pulleys are the simple option if you want to keep the original Shimano cage; the Race 14/19 oversized cage goes further with larger pulleys and a carbon cage.

BB86 Shimano 24 mm FAQ

Is this bottom bracket compatible with Shimano 105 R7100, Ultegra R8100 or Dura-Ace R9200?

Yes. These cranksets use a 24 mm spindle. You only need to confirm that your frame is BB86 / PF86.5 with a 41 mm internal diameter.

Are BB86 and PF86.5 the same standard?

For road bikes, both names refer to the same family: approximately 86.5 mm shell width, 41 mm internal diameter and PressFit cups.

Is my Rotor Aldhu or Vegast compatible?

Yes if it uses a 24 mm spindle. Rotor 30 mm versions require the CyclingCeramic BB86 41/30.

Can I use this with a Rotor INpower or 2INpower?

Not if the crankset uses Rotor's 30 mm spindle. Choose the BB86 41/30 version instead.

Is it compatible with SRAM DUB?

No. SRAM DUB uses a 28.99 mm spindle, so you need the CyclingCeramic BB86 DUB 41/29.

Is it compatible with SRAM GXP?

Not directly. GXP uses an asymmetric 24/22 mm spindle and requires a BB86 version designed for GXP.

Why is it heavier than a Shimano PressFit bottom bracket?

Shimano uses very light plastic/composite cups. CyclingCeramic uses machined aluminium cups and an internal protection sleeve; verified weight is 89 g.

Do ceramic bearings need maintenance?

Yes. Periodic cleaning and re-greasing help preserve low friction and bearing life. The interval depends on rain, washing, dust and mileage.

How to install the CyclingCeramic BB86 bottom bracket

BB86 is a PressFit system: the cups must enter the frame perfectly straight and without side load. If you are not used to pressing cups into a carbon frame, have the job done by a workshop.

Tools required

BB86 cup remover such as Park Tool BBT-90.3, suitable hammer or mallet, bearing press such as Park Tool HHP-3, clean cloth, mild degreaser and assembly paste.

1

Remove the old bottom bracket

After removing the crankset, insert the remover behind the first cup. Tap progressively to drive it out, then repeat on the opposite side. Never strike the frame or bearing directly.

2

Clean the BB86 interfaces

Remove old grease and dirt. Inspect the frame surfaces and make sure no internal cable interferes with the protection sleeve.

3

Apply a thin layer of assembly paste

Apply a small amount of assembly paste to the frame interfaces and the outer base of the cups. There is no need to use excessive product.

4

Press the cups in straight

Position both cups carefully and use the press to drive them in gradually until fully seated. If a cup starts to go in at an angle, stop and realign it before continuing.

5

Check rotation before reinstalling the crankset

Make sure the bottom bracket is centred, the internal sleeve does not contact any cable and the bearings rotate freely. Refit the Shimano or Rotor 24 mm crankset according to the manufacturer's instructions.
