Because even a perfectly adjusted rear derailleur still loses energy through chain articulation, bearing resistance and pulley geometry. This cage targets those losses without forcing you to replace a Shimano groupset you already like.

The real point of 14/19T pulleys: make the chain bend less
Less chain articulation
A larger pulley gives the chain a larger bending radius. Each link therefore articulates through a smaller angle, reducing part of the repeated mechanical loss that happens hundreds of times every minute you pedal.

You get the same CyclingCeramic ceramic-bearing technology used in the brand's premium pulley wheels: low friction, free rotation and accurate chain guidance.
Carbon structure and a refined profile
On Ultegra R8150 and compatible previous-generation 11-speed derailleurs, you move from a more conventional stock design to a carbon-and-aluminium cage. On the already premium Dura-Ace R9250, the main benefits come from the larger pulley geometry, bearings, tension control and optimized profile.

We weighed the 2026 Race cages received by Velo-Perso on the same Park Tool scale. Black, blue or red: 98 g. The pulley wheels use the same base material and are then anodized, so colour does not meaningfully change the weight.

The four holes on the 2026 cage have a real purpose

2026 installation: finally accessible to a careful home mechanic
Early oversized cages could be intimidating to fit. After close to a decade of development, the current design is far easier and more reliable. The removable stop and 2026 construction make spring handling and installation much more straightforward.
- Installation is possible with normal workshop tools and the supplied instructions
- Plan for a slightly longer chain, commonly 2 to 4 additional links
- Adjust B-tension after installation to maintain the correct pulley-to-cassette gap
- Check indexing across the full cassette
- Then choose the spring-tension position that matches your riding
To get the point of a low-friction cage: do not pair it with a badly worn or dry chain. A chain in excellent condition, properly lubricated or waxed, is the ideal companion to this upgrade.

On many modern road bikes, the frame, wheels and groupset are almost entirely black. Anodized pulley wheels add colour without overwhelming the bike. Black stays discreet; blue or red makes the drivetrain stand out immediately.

Is it compatible with Shimano Ultegra R8150?
Yes. The 12-speed RD-R8150 is one of the main applications for this cage. It is also designed for the Dura-Ace RD-R9250.
Can I use it with an older Shimano 11-speed groupset?
Yes. Compatibility extends to Shimano road Ultegra 8000/8050 and Dura-Ace 9100/9150 series, including the relevant SS/GS variants.
What is the actual weight of the 2026 Race cage?

Why use 14T and 19T pulley wheels?
The larger diameter reduces the articulation angle of each chain link. The chain bends less sharply, helping to reduce mechanical losses.
What are the four adjustment holes for?
They change spring tension. For road riding, we generally recommend more tension for chain control. For TT or triathlon, a lower-tension setting can be used when minimizing drivetrain load is the priority.
Does installation still require a professional mechanic?
No. The current design is the result of several generations of development and is considerably easier to install. A careful home mechanic with suitable tools can complete the job by following the instructions, then checking chain length, B-tension and indexing.
