If your BB86 frame has a 28.99 mm SRAM DUB spindle, use a dedicated 41/29 bottom bracket. A Shimano 41/24 model will not fit. Also check the manufacturer’s specified spacers, especially with Wide setups. Older SRAM GXP 24/22 mm spindles need a different model.

Which bikes and frames use the BB86 standard?Canyon, Scott, Giant, Van Rysel, Merida and others — depending on generation
BB86 appears on many road bikes, but a model name alone is not proof of compatibility. Frame standards can change with model year and specification.
For example, several generations of Canyon Aeroad, Ultimate and carbon Endurace use PressFit 86, but other Canyon models — including certain aluminium versions — use different standards.
Confirm a 41 mm internal shell bore and an 86.5 mm shell width, then check your crank spindle. BSA and T47 frames are not compatible with BB86 press-fit cups.

Well-designed ceramic bottom brackets combine bearing quality with accurately machined cups, seals and assembly. Actual results depend on grease, preload, frame condition and the components compared. There is no universal watt-saving claim that applies to every bike.

How do I install and maintain a BB86 bottom bracket?Correct press tool, shell tolerances, lubrication and seals
BB86 is a press-fit system. Cups must be pressed into clean frame surfaces using the correct tool and the manufacturer’s instructions. Never force a cup into place.
Creaking can originate from frame tolerances, misalignment or other components: ceramic bearings do not automatically solve noise. Check the correct spacers, crank preload and seal maintenance.

Are BB86 and BB92 the same?
They share a nominal 41 mm shell bore but not the same shell width. Road BB86 is 86.5 mm; MTB BB92 is wider. Some models fit both — always check the specific product.

Yes, provided you select the BB86 bottom bracket for its exact spindle: 24 mm Shimano or Rotor, 28.99 mm DUB, or 30 mm for relevant Rotor cranks.
Will ceramic bearings eliminate creaking?
Not necessarily. Frame tolerances, bearing alignment and correct pressing are often more important than the bearing material.

BB86 describes the frame shell, not the groupset on the bike. This range requires a PressFit frame shell with a 41 mm internal diameter, 86.5 mm road shell width and a straight 24 mm crank spindle.
Compatible road cranksets
- Shimano 105 R7000 / R7100, Ultegra R8000 / R8100 and Dura-Ace R9100 / R9200 (24 mm spindle).
- Other compatible Shimano Hollowtech II road cranksets with a 24 mm spindle on a BB86 frame.
- Rotor ALDHU 24 / VEGAST 24, only when configured with the 24 mm spindle.
Do not mix these up
SRAM DUB (28.99 mm) and Rotor 30 mm spindles require specific bottom brackets for the same BB86 frame. A BSA or T47 frame is not BB86, even if it uses a Shimano crankset.
If unsure, use the compatibility finder. Even premium bearings cannot fix a frame shell that is damaged, out of tolerance or incorrectly prepared.

Is BB86 still widely used in 2026?
Yes. It remains common on road bikes across many generations. Some newer frames use different standards, so verify your exact bike model and year.
Can it replace Shimano SM-BB72-41B or SM-BB92-41B?
Yes, on a compatible road BB86 41 × 86.5 mm frame with a Shimano 24 mm spindle. Always confirm your frame dimensions rather than relying solely on the original part number.
Will ceramic bearings always save 2 watts?
No. There is no fixed gain: it depends on the bearings compared, seals, lubricant, installation and riding conditions. Ceramic is a quality-focused upgrade, not a universal watt-saving guarantee.
Will ceramic bearings eliminate creaking?
Not necessarily. Creaking can originate at the shell-cup interface, from misalignment or from unrelated components. Clean preparation and correct press fitting are essential.
