Choose your gearing by terrain, not by Shimano groupset level
| Gearing | Best suited to | Why choose it? |
|---|---|---|
| 48/34 | Climbing, endurance, high cadence | A smaller big ring that works very well with modern cassettes while keeping a 34T inner ring for long climbs. |
| 50/34 | All-round road use | The classic compact ratio with a proper aero outer face and very low weight. |
| 52/36 | Fast road riding | The familiar performance compromise for speed without giving up versatility. |
| 54/40 | Fast racing | Adds a very sporty gearing option to Shimano cranksets that may not offer it as standard. |
| 56/40 | TT, triathlon, very fast road bikes | A 56T big ring is usable by a surprisingly wide range of strong riders with 12-speed gearing, while the 40T inner ring remains far more versatile than a 44T. |
Velo-Perso.com's opinion
“ALUGEAR is especially interesting because it does not force you to choose between aerodynamics, weight and sensible gearing. The 50/34 and 52/36 finally give you a genuinely aero look with accessible ratios; 54/40 works very well for fast racing; and 56/40 takes you clearly into time-trial territory without imposing a 44T inner ring. It is also one of the best options if you already own a Shimano R8100-P or R9200-P: keep your power meter and simply change the drivetrain components.”
Compatible with Shimano power-meter cranksets
ALUGEAR offers specific covers for R7100, R8100, R8100-P, R9200 and R9200-P. Select the version that exactly matches your crankset for the cleanest integration.
Using an R8100-P or R9200-P? You can keep Shimano’s integrated power meter: simply choose the matching ALUGEAR Power Meter cover.

Rotor or ALUGEAR? Choose for the exact job
Mainly want 54/39? Look at the open Rotor kit.
The 54/39 is easier to use in the mountains than 54/40 while still giving you a genuinely fast big ring.
See the Rotor 50/34 to 54/39 kit →
Looking for 54/42, 55/42, 56/44 or 58/44? Go Rotor AERO.
For very fast bikes, TT use or riders who specifically want large gearing.

Installation: use the matching inner and outer chainrings
The shift ramps and pickup points are designed to work with the matching ring combination. For the best front shifting, always use the ALUGEAR outer and inner ring intended to work together.
1
Choose the correct cover
R7100, R8100, R8100-P, R9200 or R9200-P: the cover must match your crankset.
2
Install the matching inner and outer rings
Use the recommended combinations: 48/34, 50/34, 52/36, 54/40 or 56/40.
3
Use the supplied ALUGEAR bolts
M8 11.5 mm hardware is included. Maximum stated torque: 10 Nm with a 5 mm hex key.
4
Re-adjust the front derailleur
A larger outer ring usually requires raising the front derailleur and redoing its setup.
5
Check the chain
A new or lightly used Shimano HG+ 12-speed chain, properly lubricated, helps preserve quiet running and shifting quality.

FAQ
Can I keep my Shimano R8100-P or R9200-P power meter?
Yes. Choose the ALUGEAR cover designed for the matching Power Meter version.
Which gearing should I choose for climbing?
48/34 and 50/34 are the easiest to use. If you want a 54T outer ring with a more climbing-friendly inner ring, also look at the Rotor 54/39 kit.
Is 56/40 only for professional riders?
No. On a TT bike or very fast road bike with 12-speed gearing, a 56T outer ring can be used by many strong riders. The 40T inner ring remains more versatile than 44T.
Do I need a new chain?
Not always, but a new or very lightly worn chain is recommended with new chainrings, especially if you are making a major gearing change.
