  Why switch to an oversized derailleur cage?

  Reduce chain articulation Larger pulley wheels, up to 19 teeth depending on the model, increase the chain's bending radius and help reduce part of the mechanical loss created at each articulation. Reduce rotational resistance CyclingCeramic pulley wheels use premium ceramic bearings designed to improve drivetrain smoothness. Improve stiffness and precision Carbon cage plates provide a stiff structure that helps maintain accurate chain guidance, including under high load. An OSPW cage is not only for a new bike. It can also be a coherent way to keep an excellent 11-speed groupset, improve how it runs and visually modernize the bike without replacing the complete drivetrain.

  What to know before you choose

  Efficiency: why can larger pulley wheels save energy?

  An oversized derailleur cage works in two ways. First, larger pulley wheels reduce the articulation angle of the chain. Second, their ceramic bearings are designed to reduce rotational resistance.

  The benefit therefore does not come from the bearing alone: 14/19 or 16/16 geometry also contributes by reducing chain-related losses.

  Stiffness and shifting precision: what do carbon cage plates do?

  Carbon plates provide excellent stiffness while keeping weight under control. They help keep both pulley wheels correctly aligned and contribute to precise shifting, including when the drivetrain is heavily loaded.

  On an older bike, they can also replace a stock cage that has become visually dated or marked by years of use.

  Aerodynamics: Race, Pro or a dedicated Aero cage?

  Different bikes have different needs. Race prioritizes versatility and low weight. Pro uses solid pulley wheels and is particularly well suited to fast or aero road bikes. Aero versions go further with a much more faired shape designed primarily for time trial and triathlon.

  For an all-round road bike used everywhere, including occasional mountain riding, Race or Pro will generally be the most logical choices.

  Installation: chain length and derailleur setup

  Installation has improved considerably on current generations and is accessible to a careful home mechanic. A few points still need to be checked:

  • allow for roughly 2 to 4 additional chain links depending on the stock cage;
  • ideally use a new chain or one in excellent condition;
  • on Shimano, check and adjust B-tension to maintain the correct upper-pulley-to-cassette gap;
  • on certain SRAM AXS versions, use the supplied installation tool when the model requires it;
  • check indexing across the full cassette after installation.

  Maintenance, spare parts and service life

  An oversized cage remains repairable. Velo-Perso offers replacement cage plates and pulley wheels sold separately for several CyclingCeramic generations.

  The cages combine carbon plates, anodized aluminium pulley wheels and carefully assembled ceramic bearings. Keeping the chain clean and properly lubricated or waxed remains the best way to preserve smooth performance.

  • All-round road: Race, or Pro if the bike is particularly fast / aero.
  • Aero road: Pro for greater versatility; Aero for a more specialized approach.
  • TT / triathlon: Aero first, or Pro if you want a more versatile solution.
  • Gravel: dedicated GRX or SRAM/XPLR versions depending on the derailleur.
  • Older high-end groups: several references remain available for Shimano, SRAM and selected 10/11-speed generations.
