Which bottom bracket to use with the Aldhu Carbon crankset?

The Rotor Aldhu Carbon crankset is designed exclusively for a 30 mm axle. As such, it requires a bottom bracket with a 30 mm internal diameter — a different standard than most OEM cranks from Shimano or Sram (which use 24 mm).

Don’t worry — we offer optimized ceramic bottom brackets for nearly all frame standards, carefully selected to match the high performance level of this crankset:

Performance and versatility at the highest level

The Rotor Aldhu Carbon 12V crankset epitomizes performance and versatility. Designed for demanding cyclists, it is not only lightweight but also extremely stiff, ensuring optimal power transfer.

In this spider mount version, you can select the exact chainrings you need. Rotor chainrings are specifically optimized for Shimano and Sram 12-speed drivetrains, with a wide variety of tooth combinations available.
In 2025, the Aldhu Carbon DirectMount 12s offers an additional ~30 g weight saving on average with one-piece machined chainrings (48/31, 50/34, 52/36): see the DirectMount 2025 model.

Velo-Perso's Review:

"It's hard to find anything more versatile in terms of performance. The chainrings are lightweight and nearly as light as the spidering version. They're optimized for 12-speed drivetrains, and we also offer an AXS-specific version."

Design & Finish

The high-gloss spider beautifully complements the sleek carbon crank arms. The chainrings are machined to reduce weight without compromising stiffness, rivalling the best from Shimano's top-tier lineup.

Technical Features

  • Axle: 30 mm
  • Crank arms: Carbon
  • Total weight: 542 g (for 175 mm arms + 50/34 Q Rings)
  • Chainring options: Round (NOQ) or oval (Q Rings), adjustable over 5 positions
  • Recommended combinations:
    • Shimano: 50/34, 52/36, 53/39, 54/39, 54/42
    • Sram: 48/35, 50/37
  • Available crank lengths: 155, 165, 170, 172.5, 175 mm

For riders looking for high gearing and aero performance, this crankset is also available in a semi-aero version with 54-tooth minimum. The AXS-compatible chainrings are fully aero-shaped.

Recommended Use

This crankset is ideal for cyclists looking to reduce the weight of their bike by around 150 g compared to a Shimano crankset, while improving overall drivetrain efficiency. For the best performance, Velo-Perso strongly recommends pairing it with our 30 mm ceramic bottom brackets. You can also choose the Aldhu Carbon DirectMount 12s (2025), which is ~30 g lighter on average with one-piece machined chainrings (48/31, 50/34, 52/36).

FAQ – Aldhu Carbon

Can I replace my Dura-Ace crankset with the Aldhu Carbon?

Yes, but you'll need to replace your bottom bracket. Aldhu Carbon requires a 30 mm axle, whereas Dura-Ace uses a 24 mm spindle. We offer several bottom bracket options compatible with your bike and the Aldhu Carbon.

Is the Aldhu Carbon compatible with a Shimano bottom bracket?

No. Shimano bottom brackets are designed for 24 mm spindles. The Aldhu Carbon requires a 30 mm bottom bracket.

Is the carbon version stiff enough?

Yes. Rotor has tested the Aldhu Carbon extensively, and its stiffness is comparable to the aluminum version — while offering nearly 100 g in weight savings.

Is weight saving really meaningful on a crankset?

Absolutely. Since cranksets rotate with every pedal stroke, reducing their mass reduces inertia and helps with acceleration and climbing. It’s one of the most effective areas to lose weight on a performance bike.

Is the Aldhu Carbon better than the Dura-Ace 9250?

They're different. The Dura-Ace is heavier and non-modular, but very well-engineered. The Aldhu Carbon offers a lighter, modular alternative, and both brands are known for high-precision chainrings.

What tool do I need to install the Aldhu Carbon?

You’ll need a long torque wrench set between 35 and 40 Nm for proper installation of the spindle and crank arms.

How can I optimize a Specialized Tarmac SL8?

The Aldhu Carbon crankset is a great upgrade for a high-performance frame like the SL8, providing reduced weight and increased stiffness.
However, since the Tarmac SL8 uses a BSA bottom bracket shell, you’ll need a specific 30 mm BSA bottom bracket such as the CyclingCeramic BSA30 to ensure compatibility with this crankset.

Can I install a power meter on this crankset?

Yes. One of the key advantages of the Aldhu system is its modularity. You can add the Rotor INspider 2.0 power meter by simply replacing the spider, without changing the arms or axle. It’s a future-proof upgrade that integrates seamlessly with your current setup.

Can the Aldhu Carbon evolve over time?

Yes. Rotor designs its components to remain compatible across generations. The modular design means you can upgrade or swap parts — spiders, chainrings, even power meters — without replacing the full crankset.
