Rotor Q-Rings oval chainring kit with covers for Shimano R7100 / R8100 / R9200

Upgrade your Shimano 12-speed crankset with Rotor Q-Rings 12.5% oval chainrings and crank-specific bolt covers. You get the Rotor oval pedalling feel together with a clean, integrated finish, without exposed chainring bolts on the outside. The covers are shaped to follow the Shimano crank arms rather than being generic bolt heads.

Two oval chainrings 4 covers + mounting bolts Integrated finish

What changes compared with the standard-bolt Q-Rings kit?

The Rotor Q-Rings use the same oval concept as our Shimano 12-speed Q-Rings kit with standard bolts. The difference is the finishing hardware: four dedicated covers follow the shape of the crank spider and conceal the visible outer fasteners. This version costs more because the crank-specific cover set is included. It is designed for riders who want to retain the premium integrated appearance of their Shimano crankset.

Key point: These covers improve the visual finish; no quantified aerodynamic saving is claimed for them.

Compatibility: which option should you select?

Choose the cover version according to the exact Shimano 12-speed crank model, not just the name of your groupset.

Crank modelSelect this optionImportant
Shimano 105 FC-R7100Ultegra R8100 / 105 R7100Same cover kit as the Ultegra R8100.
Shimano Ultegra FC-R8100Ultegra R8100 / 105 R7100Same cover kit as the 105 R7100.
Shimano Dura-Ace FC-R9200Dura-Ace R9200R9200-specific covers; do not select the R8100 option.
Shimano power meter cranks: the product listing also mentions the R8100-P. For FC-R9200-P or another integrated power meter version, please confirm the exact model and cover clearance before ordering. Other crankset generations are not covered by this selection.

What is included?

  • 1 Rotor Q-Rings oval outer chainring (with a thin chainline adjustment spacer, to be used only if needed)
  • 1 Rotor Q-Rings oval inner chainring
  • 1 set of 4 Rotor covers matched to your R8100/R7100 or R9200 selection
  • 4 matching cover mounting bolts

Aluminium chainrings manufactured in Spain. Rotor Q-Rings ovality: 12.5%. The crank arms and crankset are not included.

Why ride Rotor oval Q-Rings?

The chainring’s effective diameter changes throughout the pedal stroke: lower around the weaker phases, higher where you generate more torque. The goal is a more consistent pedalling feel, especially on sustained climbs and longer steady efforts. Results depend on your cadence, riding style and personal preferences: there is no universal guaranteed watt gain. Read our in-depth guide to oval chainrings, testing, benefits and limitations.

Q-Rings mounting position: on these Shimano cranksets, the bolt pattern sets the chainring orientation. You cannot adjust multiple OCP positions as you can with certain dedicated Rotor cranksets.

Which gearing should you choose?

Choose your inner and outer chainrings using the product options. Popular gearing combinations to consider include:

50/34 Compact: mountains, endurance and long climbs
52/36 Semi-compact: fast rides, rolling terrain and gran fondos
53/39 Sporty gearing: powerful riders, racing and fast training
54/39 High gearing: racing and faster courses

Check the combinations actually available in the product selectors and allow for front derailleur adjustment. See our 50/34 versus 52/36 comparison for gearing advice.

Installation and adjustment

Install the chainrings and covers in the order shown by Rotor, starting with clean interfaces and checking for play. The official Rotor Shimano R8100 / R9200 cover installation guide (PDF) specifies a 5 mm Allen key and 7–8 Nm torque for the cover system bolts. Do not apply that torque to unrelated parts without checking their instructions. After fitting, check chainline, front derailleur height and alignment, and test shifting under low load.

FAQ – Rotor Q-Rings with Shimano crank covers

Do the R8100 covers fit Shimano 105 R7100 cranks?

Yes. For this kit, Shimano 105 FC-R7100 cranks use the same cover set as Ultegra FC-R8100. Select the “Ultegra R8100 / 105 R7100” option.

Are Dura-Ace R9200 and Ultegra R8100 covers interchangeable?

No. FC-R9200 covers have a different design tailored to the Dura-Ace crank. Select the specific R9200 option for FC-R9200 cranks.

Why is this kit more expensive than the standard Q-Rings kit?

Both kits use Rotor oval Q-Rings chainrings. This version also includes four crank-specific covers and matching bolts to conceal the visible fastening points and create a cleaner finish.

Do the covers deliver a measured aerodynamic advantage?

Their main benefit is a more integrated external finish with no exposed chainring bolts. No quantified aerodynamic gain is claimed for these covers.

What exactly comes in the box?

The kit includes one oval outer Q-Rings chainring, one oval inner Q-Rings chainring, four Rotor covers and four matching bolts. A thin chainline spacer may be used if required. Crank arms are not included.

Can I adjust Q-Rings OCP angle on a Shimano crank?

No. These Shimano cranks have a fixed Q-Rings mounting orientation. Multiple OCP positions require a compatible Rotor crankset system.

Will it fit Shimano power meter cranksets?

The product listing identifies FC-R8100-P compatibility. For FC-R9200-P or another power meter variant, please request a fitment check before ordering.

Do I need to adjust the front derailleur after installation?

Yes. Check front derailleur setup, shifting, chainline and bolt torque. Follow the Rotor cover installation guide.
