CyclingCeramic Racing Chain: make every watt count

A great drivetrain should transfer your effort to the rear wheel with as little loss as possible. The CyclingCeramic Racing Chain undergoes a dedicated low-friction preparation in the brand's French workshop. It arrives ready to install for time trials, triathlons, sportives and race day.

What makes it different: thorough degreasing, professional hot-wax treatment, a cleaner drivetrain and optimised friction from the first ride. The chain is professionally prepared in France; this does not mean the underlying chain itself is entirely manufactured in France.

A carefully prepared racing component

CyclingCeramic first removes the factory lubricant and contaminants, using an ultrasonic cleaning process. The chain is then treated with hot wax designed to penetrate the moving parts inside its links. This preparation helps reduce reliance on traditional oil-based lubricants and the black residue they leave on the drivetrain.

Efficiency is only part of the story. A cleaner, quieter and precisely prepared chain also adds to the pleasure of riding a bike that feels considered down to the smallest detail.

How much efficiency can it deliver?

In its published comparison, CyclingCeramic reports a saving of approximately 3 watts versus a conventional oil-lubricated Shimano chain: 3.6 W of measured drivetrain friction compared with 6.5 W under the stated test conditions. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not a guaranteed saving for every rider, bike or power output.

If you are chasing the final gains in a time trial or triathlon, paying attention to chain preparation makes sense alongside tyre choice, riding position and overall drivetrain maintenance.

Built for the days that matter

  • Time trials and triathlons: reduce mechanical drivetrain losses during a sustained effort.
  • One-day races and sportives: start with a chain already prepared for your event.
  • Premium road builds: enjoy a cleaner, more refined drivetrain without replacing the entire groupset.

Compatibility: choose the correct version

The range includes 10-speed and 11-speed versions, Shimano/Campagnolo 12s, dedicated SRAM AXS 12s and track options, depending on availability. Always select the variant that matches your drivetrain from the product selector.

For the Shimano/Campagnolo 12s version, CyclingCeramic specifies a KMC X12 chain with 126 links and a KMC quick link. These details do not necessarily apply to every other variant. For SRAM AXS Flattop drivetrains, choose the dedicated compatible chain.

Installation and care

  • Check chain length and any model-specific installation requirements.
  • Complete a short test ride before your event to confirm smooth shifting.
  • Prefer dry conditions to preserve the initial low-friction treatment; avoid pressure-washing the treated chain.
  • As the wax wears away, clean and lubricate or re-wax the chain as appropriate. The initial treatment is not permanent.

CyclingCeramic has historically described an optimum treatment life of approximately 700 km in its tests. Actual results depend on weather, dust, cleaning and riding conditions. After the initial preparation has worn away, the chain can still be used and maintained normally until its service wear limit is reached.

Velo-Perso.com's opinion

We like the idea of fitting a professionally prepared chain for an event where every detail counts. At this price point, our recommendation is to reserve it primarily for specific performance goals: a time trial, triathlon or important one-day race.

Our advice: preserve the fresh treatment for the rides that matter, avoid very wet conditions and, once the initial preparation is used up, continue riding this high-quality chain with proper maintenance. Efficiency and riding enjoyment should go hand in hand.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to degrease the chain before fitting it?
No. CyclingCeramic has already completed the specialist preparation. You still need to check length and installation.

Can I ride in the rain?
Yes, the chain will function, but water and contaminants can shorten the life of the initial treatment. Adjust maintenance accordingly.

Can I keep using the chain after the initial treatment wears off?
Yes. Maintain it as you would a conventional chain, until its normal wear limit is reached.
