Regular price: €328.00
Reduced price: €319.00
Tax included

Just 189 g for a genuine Shimano-compatible 12-speed road cassette in 11-34. The NOVA34 combines 11 sprockets machined from a single piece of heat-treated Cr-Mo steel with a large 34-tooth sprocket made of high-strength 7075 aluminium. A premium cassette made in Poland, designed to save weight without sacrificing a versatile gear range.

Recommended chain: Shimano 12s HG+, particularly CN-M8100 or CN-M9100. We recommend fitting a new chain with the cassette.

189 grams. An extraordinary weight-saving upgrade.

An exceptionally light road cassette with a distinctive construction: eleven steel sprockets machined as one piece and a large 7075 aluminium sprocket, engineered for Shimano 12s road drivetrains.

Precision machining, a versatile climbing-friendly gear range and European manufacturing: the NOVA34 is made for riders who count every gram.

Weight comparison: NOVA34 vs Shimano 105, Ultegra and Dura-Ace

We compare only Shimano 11-34 road cassettes with 12 sprockets, so every weight saving is based on the same gear range.

12s cassetteClaimed weightNOVA34 saving
Shimano Dura-Ace CS-R9200 11-34253 g−64 g (−25%)
Shimano Ultegra CS-R8101 11-34345 g−156 g (−45%)
Shimano 105 CS-R7101 11-34361 g−172 g (−48%)

ALUGEAR claimed weight includes the lockring; Shimano average weights are taken from its technical documentation. Actual weights may vary with production tolerances and weighing mandhods. Percentages are rounded.

Velo-Perso.com verdict: saving 64 g over Dura-Ace, which already uses titanium sprockets, is remarkable. Compared with Shimano 105, the saving reaches 172 g — a meaningful upgrade without changing the gear range or wheel.

Why is the largest sprocket made of aluminium?

11 Cr-Mo steel sprockets

The eleven smaller sprockets, from 11T to 30T, are machined from a single piece of 40HM chromium-molybdenum steel. Vacuum heat treatment gives a claimed hardness of approximately 52 HRC.

This construction aims to deliver overall stiffness, precise sprocket alignment and wear resistance on the gears used most frequently.

34T in 7075 aluminium

The largest sprocket is deliberately made from high-strength CNC-machined, anodised 7075 aluminium. This is a high-performance engineering alloy, not ordinary aluminium.

Using aluminium at this larger diameter offers a particularly attractive weight saving. More teeth can engage the chain than on a small sprocket, although wear life may still differ from that of an all-steel equivalent.

Should you worry about the aluminium 34T sprocket? No: it is an intentional engineering trade-off between weight, performance and longevity, not a manufacturing defect. Under comparable conditions, aluminium can wear faster than steel. For best results, keep the chain clean and lubricated, and replace it before excessive elongation, especially if you ride in the mountains.

Which chain should you use with the NOVA34?

Our recommendation: a Shimano 12s HYPERGLIDE+ (HG+) chain, preferably new. The Shimano CN-M8100 and CN-M9100 are two suitable Shimano 12s options. The manufacturer states compatibility with Shimano HG / HG+ 12s chains.

If your current chain is strandched or worn, fitting a new one with the cassette will help protect the sprocket teeth and maintain clean shifting. Follow the chain’s directional installation instructions and use its matching quick link.

Compatibility and gear progression

Compatible drivetrains

  • Shimano Dura-Ace R9200 Di2, 12s
  • Shimano Ultegra R8100 Di2, 12s
  • Shimano 105 R7100 Di2, 12s
  • Shimano 105 mechanical, 12s
  • Shimano road HG 11/12s freehub bodies; HG spline L and L2 profiles are stated to be compatible

Important: do not confuse Shimano HG with Micro Spline. Also verify that your rear derailleur supports an 11-34 cassette.

12 gears for all-round riding

11 – 12 – 13 – 14 – 15 – 17 – 19 – 21 – 24 – 27 – 30 – 34 teeth

Close spacing in the faster gears gives way to the lower ratios needed for climbing. Ideal for a lightweight, performance-oriented road bike that still has the gearing for mountain rides.

European manufacturing and finishes

The NOVA34 is designed, machined and quality-checked in Poland. Multi-axis CNC machining creates the tooth profiles, shifting ramps and weight-saving cut-outs. The lockring and inner spacer are also made from aluminium.

The largest sprocket, lockring and spacer feature coordinated anodised finishes. Depending on the variant: black, silver, red, blue, orange, green, gold, purple, steel or mocha. Available colours depend on the variants offered on this product page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the NOVA34 compatible with Shimano 105 12s?

Yes. It is stated to work with Shimano 105 12s road groupsets, both Di2 and mechanical, provided your wheel has the correct freehub and your rear derailleur supports a 34T largest sprocket.

Is the aluminium largest sprocket fragile?

It is machined from high-strength 7075 alloy and is an intentional part of ALUGEAR’s design. Unlike the other eleven sprockets, it is not steel, so its wear characteristics may be different. A chain in good condition and regular maintenance are essential.

Do I need a special chain?

We recommend a Shimano 12s HG+ chain, particularly CN-M8100 or CN-M9100, ideally new. Do not use an 11s chain.

Will this cassette fit a Shimano 11s road freehub?

ALUGEAR states compatibility with Shimano HG Road L and L2 splines. Check that your freehub uses one of these standards, rather than MTB Micro Spline.

What is the cassette lockring torque?

ALUGEAR recommends tightening to 40 Nm, using a suitable cassette tool and torque wrench. Make sure the splines are correctly aligned before tightening.

Velo-Perso.com recommendation

For a high-end build, we particularly appreciate the engineering logic: heat-treated steel for the eleven most frequently used sprockets and 7075 aluminium to dramatically reduce the weight of the largest one. At 189 g in 11-34, the NOVA34 makes perfect sense on a build where every gram matters, provided you are happy to maintain an ultralight component carefully.
