With feedback from competitors and enthusiasts, strengths of the design have been optimized in the new 2015 Lunocet Pro model. Most notably is the stiffness and robustness of the peduncle spring. This spring and the peduncle have been improved with a larger, more powerful spring and dual pivots as opposed to the single pivot design of ’14 Luno peduncle.
The Dual Pivot Peduncle has the advantage of dividing the pitching load on the spring in half. The robustness of the spring is greatly improved. The ’14 Luno spring was designed for the classic Lunocet and was at the edge of usability in terms of stiffness when applied to the new Pro model. The increased size of the new ’15 Pro spring handles the forces of a 70% increase in surface area of the flukes quite well and allows for a larger adjustment in stiffness with the three settings.
The new Lunocet Pro has been designed specifically for the sport of competitive freediving. The Luno Pro delivers superior performance in acceleration, buoyancy and drag characteristics, and power. With approximately 70% more surface area than the standard Lunocet, the 2015 Lunocet Pro model is simply the most powerful swim fin on the market. The compact modular design of the standard Lunocet is carried over in the new Lunocet Pro.
So how do you decide which model is best for you? The answer is in the type of diving you want to do and to some extent how big you are. If it is hydrotouring, which involves distances covering more than 2 miles, the standard Lunocet may be your propulsor of choice due to the reduced mass of the unit. The low mass of the standard Luno allows for hours and hours of swimming without fatigue as there is less energy spent in accelerating the fin during the swim strokes. However, if you are 200+ pounds in body weight, theuno Pro can be used effectively for hydrotouring long distances. If you seek power and acceleration, the Luno Pro is the ultimate tool. Also, if you are a competitive freediver, the Luno Pro is the fin of choice for CWT and DYN due to superior power and acceleration, near constant buoyancy characteristics regardless of depth, low drag and low mass.
Lunos are built super tough. The compact size and rubber skin of the flukes allows for free energetic use around others divers without worry of injury.
The robustness and compactness also makes for the easiest fin for transport on the market. Both the Standard Luno and the Luno Pro quickly separate into three pieces that can be carried in a small backpack on board a plane.
In addition to the improvements on the Luno design, I have brought three new molds online and have added more tooling to the project to allow for faster build times and lower prices. The molding of the flukes is the bottleneck in production as we have to hand pack each one due to the special machined aluminum core. We will continue to ramp up production to improve lead times even further.
